Maintaining consistent refrigeration temperatures is essential for any facility that stores or processes food. Yet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently cited 155 facilities nationwide for failing to maintain proper manufacturing controls, many of which involved refrigeration systems.

Even small temperature fluctuations can affect product quality, food safety, and regulatory compliance.

A Walk-In Cooler That Wouldn’t Stay Cold

Our technicians recently worked with a food processing operation experiencing issues with a walk-in storage box. The facility asked us to replace the condensers and evaporators in the unit, which included a monitoring system designed to sound an alarm if temperatures rose above 50 degrees.

While completing the installation, our team identified deteriorating insulation within the walk-in box panels and recommended repairs to prevent additional strain on the refrigeration system.

Once the new components were installed, the alarm stopped sounding. However, the refrigeration system soon began shutting down intermittently, requiring additional service.

When Insulation Impacts Refrigeration Performance

During our return visit, we used an infrared temperature gun to inspect the walls and ceiling of the box. The readings showed several sections where insulation had deteriorated, allowing cold air to escape.

As a result, the refrigeration system was forced to work harder to maintain safe storage temperatures. While the alarm system alerted staff to temperature fluctuations, it could not identify the insulation problem causing the strain on the equipment.

Why Cold Storage Requires a Complete System Approach

Walk-in coolers and freezers depend on more than compressors and evaporators. Proper insulation, panel integrity, and sealed environments all play a critical role in maintaining stable internal temperatures.

When one component fails—especially insulation—the entire system must compensate, which can lead to equipment shutdowns or inefficient operation.

The Value of Preventative Refrigeration Maintenance

Delaying recommended repairs ultimately resulted in more extensive work and additional downtime for the facility.

Routine refrigeration inspections help identify these issues early, protecting both equipment performance and product safety. A proactive maintenance approach helps ensure refrigeration systems operate reliably and efficiently.
